I have struggled to find a good method for making trees in 3D. I've tried high poly, but my machine started really slowing down! I've tried low poly, but it looked too fake. Here is my method for making Mid poly trees that look great from all angles, and don't take up so much resources.

I hope this tutorial helps!

If anyone has a better method of doing something, please share!

I don't know why your textures would disappear when rotating. the view. Make sure they are UV'ed on, not projection mapped. As for the weird black shadows. I don't Know how Maya is, but in Blender I have to tell every material that the leaf shadow falls on to calculate transparency shadows, If I don't do that, the shadow will be in the shape of the polygon instead of the leafs.

Also, like I said, you need a bunch of lights from different angles to get the tree to shade right.

Very nice! I struggle too with hi-poly trees, and it seems you've found a decent mid-poly solution. Thanks for sharing.
